Avoid buying a domain name without the extension .com. If the .com name is taken that owner will more than likely win in a battle over rights to that name even if you make it big with that name.

If you insist on buying the .info .biz .org or any other extension without .com you probably wouldn't get a Trademark if the other guy owns the .com.

Never buy the .info .biz .org or any other extension with the intention of selling that name to the entity that owns the .com.

When designing your web page keep your most important message above the fold.

Simply put when your page pops onto the screen what is showing is above the fold. When you need to scroll down to see something that is Below The Fold, That means Odds of it being seen go down.

Because todays Speedy Surfers need a reason to scroll down, if you don't put your important info above the fold it may go unnoticed.

What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

A Top Level Domain is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot ("."). The most common (TLDs) are .com, .net and .org.

Several Top Level Domains have been added to the menu, including, .biz, .info, .name, and .ws to mention a few.

The Top Level Domains have certain guidelines attached, but are not for the most part available to any registrant, anywhere in the world.

Exceptions are the restricted TLDs (rTLDs) which include .edu, .mil, .museum, .name, and .gov Just to mention a few that require the registrant to represent a certain type of entity, or to belong to a certain community.

The .name TLD is available strictly for individuals, while .edu is reserved for educational entities, such as universities or high schools. The .gov TLD is available strictly for government. Just to mention a few.

Where appropriate a Top Level Domain name can be of geographic significance. They are called country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) and include such top-level domains as .ca (Canada), .dk (Denmark), .uk (United Kingdom), and .us (United States). There's 300 or so of those.

What is a Second Level Domain (SLD)?

Located immediately to the left of the dot ("."), the Second Level Domain is the "readable" part of the domain name. The Second Level Domain is entirely defined by the registrant, and often refers to the organization or entity associated with the IP address. For example: In www.JimSmith.ws (JimSmith) is a second-level domain. Also
happens to be the best deals for Domain Names.

** Google Desktop Live **

Google's free desktop search utility made it out of the
"beta" stage and users can now download a finished 1.0
version from http://desktop.google.com for free.

With improvements over the "beta" version released in 2004,
the finished version not only allows you to search your own
computer for Microsoft Office documents, emails, and
instant messaging history, but now supports music, video,
images, PDF files, and the Firefox and Netscape Web
browsers.

In their never-ending quest to make their name synonymous
with "search," Google's Desktop Search utility makes a bold
step towards dominating the desktop search market.

Available for Windows XP and Windows 2000, Google's desktop
search remains miles ahead of MSN and Yahoo!, who released
their own beta version desktop search utilities several
months after Google.

Google also chose to create an environment friendly to
third-party software developers by encouraging them to
develop "plug ins" that expand the capabilities of their
Desktop Search application.

By allowing others to add their "two-cents" to the program,
Google will further cement their position as the leader in
this emerging field of "desktop" search.

** MP3 Player Wars Boiling Over **

In response to Apple's iPod Shuffle, a low priced flash
memory MP3 audio player, Sony announced plans to offer a
comparably low priced MP3 player in the $100 to $150 range.

This in response to complaints from consumers that Sony's
past MP3 player offerings rated too expensive next to the
feature-rich iPpod.

Consumers can expect several developments in response to
Sony's entry into the "Under $150" MP3 player market.

First, increased use of the portable players will cause
related businesses selling the actual MP3's and accessories
to experience continued growth, both online and offline.

Second, a new trend known as "pod casting" is getting set
to explode.

"Pod casting" involves content providers (radio dj's,
entrepreneurs, columnists, musicians) creating MP3 audio
content and then making it super simple for listeners to
automatically download these "broadcasts" online and listen
to them at their convenience.

The fact that consumers can now get their hands on the
equipment to download and listen to these broadcasts so
cheaply means a whole world of amateur dj's and talk show
hosts is about to hit the cyber-airwaves.

Though you've heard rumblings about it, and people are
grasping around in the dark trying to get a grip on how
to implement it, now you can actually plan to see and hear
about the widespread use of "pod casting" in the very near
future since a potential audience of listeners with the
right equipment is now set to grow.

** Associated Press Offers RSS Feeds **

The Associated Press now offers RSS feeds of their top news
stories. RSS (Real Simple Syndication) makes it possible
for content providers to offer instant updates to their
readers without sending email.

Anyone with an RSS reader such as FeedDemon
(www.feeddemon.com) can receive and read RSS feeds.

Traditionally, the Associated Press marketed their services
exclusively to newspapers and online sources such as Yahoo!
News.

Now, by offering their RSS feeds directly to consumers at
www.ap.org, the Associated Press is obviously seeking to
bypass online news sources and go directly to the consumer.

The fact that the world's oldest and largest news source
has chosen to start offering content this way demonstrates
quite clearly that RSS is fast coming of age as an
acceptable mass-communication medium and that widespread
consumer adoption is imminent.

Soon, there'll be an RSS reader on every computer desktop
and the use of RSS will become as widespread as email.

Ever needed a computer program or online application to
perform one simple task, but you ended up buying an
expensive program that performed many functions you
couldn't use?

The answer to your dilemma may lie in a form of software
distribution called "shareware", which has been around for
a long time, but wasn't really adopted into the mainstream
until the advent of the easy-to-use World Wide Web.

Most people have heard the term "shareware", however they
really don't know what it means or think that shareware
only applies to the online "geek" set that understands
computers very well.

Because of shareware many people who purchase expensive
software from retail establishments could save themselves
significant time and money with a little research at the
right websites,

"Shareware" basically encompasses two types of software
licensing, freeware and shareware.

Freeware means the software's designer has placed the
software out there for anyone to use however they wish.

You don't have to pay for it or even register it.

Shareware usually comes with a 30-day free trial and then a
small registration fee paid directly to the software's
designer or agent - frequently a very small fee compared to
the local software store!

Read the software program's license to find out whether a
program comes as freeware or shareware.

Shareware designers create programs that fill specific
needs for their customers, often filling niches too small
for larger software companies to exploit profitably.

These smaller designers usually operate as "one-man"
operations.

You can find lots of shareware and freeware programs at
www.download.com and www.shareware.com. CNet, an online
company specializing in computer and information
technology, operates both sites.

Download.com offers a variety of primarily shareware
programs with reasonably lengthy descriptions of each
program's features.

Shareware.com offers many titles licensed as shareware with
a large helping of freeware programs thrown in for good
measure.

Both sites have a searchable database of software programs;
potential customers simply log onto the sites and enter
keywords related to the software they need. The most
immediate difference between the two websites centers on
shareware.com's abbreviated descriptions.

Since Shareware.com has indexed over 250,000 programs and
must conserve space and money (most people don't pay to
list their programs) descriptions are kept to a minimum.

I personally have found a number of wonderful software
application using shareware and freeware, including: a time
card program with integrated billing; a "spam buster"
program that lets me delete unsolicited email without
downloading to my hard drive; a script that disables
people's ability to right click my copyrighted images and
save them to their computer.

Shareware does have a downside in that you rarely get any
tech support, especially not by phone.

In order to use the sites successfully you must understand
the basics of downloading and installing software.

Despite the slight technical downside, if you ever find
yourself wondering whether anyone ever wrote a program to
perform a specific function, chances are at least one
person has!
